About the Organisation

Nature, Environment, Wildlife, Filmmaking (NEWF) is a non-profit company based in Durban, South Africa. NEWF serves as a platform for African filmmakers, conservationists, and scientists to collaborate through storytelling to protect the continent’s natural assets. Initially launched as an annual gathering in 2017, it has evolved into a year-round, community-focused organization dedicated to breaking barriers and building capacity for African nature, environment, and wildlife storytellers. Through initiatives like the Africa Refocused program, in partnership with the National Geographic Society, NEWF amplifies African voices in global media. Its eKhaya Storytelling Research and Dive Centre in Sodwana Bay hosts various training initiatives, while the annual NEWF Fellows Summit and Congress convenes around 350 participants to foster engagement and growth in the field.

About the Job

NEWF seeks an experienced professional to lead the team while promoting a culture of narrative change through storytelling, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with proven managerial experience in operations, human resources, finance, fundraising, and communications. Strong communication skills, the ability to delegate responsibilities effectively, and collaboration across departments are essential. The General Manager will be driven to strengthen the management team for maximum efficiency. While the position is based in Durban, South Africa, NEWF is open to flexible work models. Travel is required, sometimes involving periods of up to two weeks away from home.

Key Responsibilities

Management & Leadership

  • Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure smooth functioning of the organization.

  • Delegate responsibilities effectively across the management team.

  • Foster a positive team dynamic and encourage leadership development.

  • Represent NEWF professionally in engagements with funders, partners, and stakeholders.

  • Drive innovation by identifying and implementing new strategies and opportunities.

  • Lead performance management by tracking and evaluating team members' contributions.

  • Provide supervision and training to ensure a cohesive and high-performing team.

Project & Financial Management

  • Maintain project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations.

  • Oversee financial planning, cash flow, and expenditure management.

  • Ensure timely financial reporting, internal auditing, and compliance with financial regulations.

  • Monitor risks associated with projects and organizational operations.

Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with NPO regulations, corporate governance standards, and statutory requirements (CIPC, SARS, etc.).

  • Oversee external financial audits and regulatory reporting.

Human Resource Management

  • Develop and monitor HR strategies to attract, recruit, and retain top talent.

  • Oversee performance management, staff development, and succession planning.

  • Address and resolve internal conflicts for a productive and inclusive work environment.

  • Draft contracts and agreements in alignment with organizational goals.

Strategic Planning & Culture Development

  • Assist Executive Directors in formulating and executing NEWF’s Strategic Plan.

  • Drive the organization's strategic intent and long-term growth objectives.

  • Promote and embed a culture aligned with NEWF’s ethos and theory of change.

  • Strengthen engagement with donors, partners, and stakeholders to expand NEWF’s impact.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree or relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience in business management or non-profit management is preferred. 

  • Proven managerial experience in building and leading successful teams, with staff accountability.

  • Strong knowledge of the non-profit sector and familiarity with operational procedures in similar environments.

  • Experience in financial planning, budgeting, and grant writing.

  • Prior experience in a similar role; experience in film, conservation, or visual storytelling is advantageous.
