About the Organisation

The Jewish National Fund Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre (WSEC) opened in September 2004. Its primary purpose is to raise environmental awareness and provide environmental education to the Mamelodi community and school learners. It runs a broad range of hands-on activity-based programmes and projects. Since its inception, the Centre has hosted thousands of learners every year who have learned about and developed skills in Water, Waste, Energy, Biodiversity and climate change management. WSEC is in Mamelodi East, in the Tshwane metro, in Gauteng, South Africa on the grounds of the Gauteng Department of Education’s regional teacher centre.

About the Job

The Centre Manager is responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall management of the JNF Walter Sisulu Environmental Centre (WSEC). The role leads programme delivery, fundraising, partnerships, financial sustainability, staff management, and organisational growth, ensuring that WSEC fulfils its mandate as a centre of excellence for environmental education, youth development, and community-based sustainability in Mamelodi and surrounding communities.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Lead the development and implementation of WSEC’s strategic plan and annual operational plans.

  • Provide leadership aligned with the mission and values of JNF and WSEC.

  • Report to and work closely with the Governing Body; prepare reports and ensure good governance.

  • Ensure compliance with legal, statutory, donor and regulatory requirements.


Programme Leadership & Impact

  • Provide oversight of all environmental education, youth development and community programmes.

  • Drive innovation in programme design, including green skills, entrepreneurship and digital learning initiatives.

  • Ensure high-quality monitoring, evaluation, learning and reporting (MEL).


Fundraising, Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Lead fundraising strategy and donor engagement (corporates, foundations, trusts, CSI and government).

  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with corporates, funders, schools, NGOs, government departments and community stakeholders.

  • Represent WSEC externally and strengthen the organisation’s public profile and credibility.

  • Lead proposal development and donor reporting.


Financial Management & Sustainability

  • Oversee budgeting, financial planning and financial sustainability strategies.

  • Ensure sound financial controls and accountability in line with donor and legal requirements.

  • Ensure transparent reporting and clean audits.


People Management & Organisational Development

  • Lead, support and manage staff, interns and volunteers.

  • Build a positive organisational culture grounded in learning, accountability and collaboration.

  • Oversee performance management, staff development and succession planning.

  • Strengthen internal systems, policies and operational efficiency.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Management, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, Education, Business Administration, Public Management or similar.


Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ senior management experience in an NGO or non-profit organisation.

  • Experience in environmental, conservation and/or education NGOs strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, donor relations and proposal development.

  • Experience managing multi-stakeholder partnerships and community-based programmes.

  • Strong financial and organisational management experience.

Other Requirements

  • Candidates should live in /near Tshwane or Midrand.

  • Valid driver’s licence and own transport.


Please note this position is based on-site in Mamelodi and will require some local travel.
