About the Organisation

Fossil Free SA is a campaign working for an end to the fossil fuel industry in South Africa, particularly through fossil fuel divestment and challenging greenwashing in all its forms. Our core campaigns are for divestment by individuals and institutions, an end to greenwashing by the creative industries, and for bans on fossil fuel advertising.

About the Job

The Campaign Coordinator will lead FFSA’s existing Fossil Ad Ban team. The incumbent must have a passion for human rights, drive and initiative, and be willing to build on existing campaign strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiative and direction: You need to be a pro-active and creative networker, be able to think strategically and creatively about how to push this campaign forward.

  • Well-organised: You need to track multiple campaign threads, and keep our overall strategy on track.

  • Communications: comms and media support, such as photography, social media planning and posting, updating websites, drafting press releases etc.

  • Research: identifying existing research, policy and laws which advances our campaign, keeping abreast of global advertising ban developments

  • Engaging decision-makers: Writing emails, setting up petitions, and engaging with policymakers, regulators, local councillors and other decision-makers

  • Events: Planning local and virtual events and activities including gathering petition signatures, engaging in peaceful protest action, setting up webinars, attending and speaking at events

  • Community building: Building a network around the campaign, connecting to the global fossil ad ban community, connecting with other key partners locally and identifying more allies

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or higher degree, or strong, demonstrated experience in a similar role

  • A passion for human rights

  • Clear knowledge and understanding of climate change and the fossil fuel industry

  • The ability to think strategically about how to advance the Fossil Ad Ban campaign

  • Willingness to build on existing campaign strategies

This is a Cape Town-based, 10-month, half-time, flexi-time contract, remote working, with a possibility of renewal, starting June 2024. You must have your own cellphone, a reliable computer and Internet connection and be able to travel locally to occasional in-person meetings and events.
