About the African Climate Legal Fellowship Program
This role is part of the African Climate Legal Fellowship Program, an 18-month program designed to build capacity at African public interest law organizations, further strategic climate and environmental legal action, and bring new attorneys to the public interest sector.
Now entering its second cohort, the Fellowship places participants (“Fellows”) in climate and environmental legal organizations in Africa (“Host Organizations”) for a fulltime, 18-month placement to advance strategic legal action, therefore helping organizations achieve their critical missions.

About the Organisation
Law for Energy Transitions Africa (LETA) is a pan-African initiative that provides technical legal input to shape laws, policies and decisions that advance just transitions to equitable renewable energy power systems across Africa, while strengthening civil society participation so that reforms reflect local contexts and deliver access, affordability, environmental protection and public benefit.
LETA works at the intersection of energy law, public interest advocacy, and civil society capacity building. Its focus is on power sector legal reform: helping to improve the laws, regulatory frameworks, planning processes, procurement systems, and public participation mechanisms that will determine whether African electricity systems become more renewable, affordable, transparent, and just.
About the Job
LETA seeks a lawyer to join its team as a Power Sector Lawyer in Nigeria. The successful candidate will provide legal support to a passionate and growing team of lawyers, serving as a key legal resource for LETA's work in Nigeria. They will provide high-quality legal and policy analysis, support strategic advocacy and legal interventions in Nigeria, help build the technical capacity of civil society partners in Nigeria, and contribute to LETA's wider legal and institutional work across the continent.
The Lawyer must have an interest in energy law, power sector regulation, and public interest legal advocacy. They will be expected to work in consortiums and partnerships with other civil society organisations.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor, analyse, and report on developments in Nigeria's electricity sector laws, regulations, policies, institutions, and reform processes.
Interpret statutory and regulatory developments affecting electricity planning, market structure, transmission, procurement, and renewable energy deployment.
Identify legal risks, gaps, and opportunities for public-interest intervention at federal and state level.
Draft comments on relevant draft laws and policies and submissions on necessary law reforms.
Build collaborative networks and work closely with civil society partners to develop legal and advocacy strategies on power sector reform and renewable energy governance.
Draft explanatory notes and memoranda for stakeholders.
Engage technical experts and oversee technical expert reports.
Support strategic litigation where appropriate.
Support legal and policy engagement with government institutions, legislatures, regulators, utilities, and other decision-makers.
Contribute to the design and implementation of workshops, trainings, convenings, and other capacity-building activities for civil society partners.
Attend and present at key national, regional and continental CSO meetings and platforms.
Assist with donor-related deliverables and internal reporting, where relevant to the Lawyer's work.
Contribute to communications outputs where relevant, including short explainers, blogs, public statements, or opinion pieces.
Work collaboratively with LETA's core legal team and contribute to wider strategic thinking, planning, and relationship-building across the initiative.
Requirements
Bachelor of Laws degree.
At least five years’ post-admission experience in energy law, electricity regulation, or closely related areas of public law and governance.
A post-graduate degree in energy policy, energy transition or a related field is desirable.
Experience working on electricity market reform, sub-national electricity regulation, public participation and/or infrastructure governance in Nigeria.
Strong knowledge of Nigeria's legal system and some specialized knowledge in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Good legal research and analysis skills in law, policy and social issues.
Sound written and oral communication skills.
Ability to grasp quickly and accurately, new and complex concepts and the ability to explain complex legal and technical issues clearly to non-specialist audiences.
Ability to work under pressure and effectively both as part of a team and independently, as called for.
Ability to balance priorities and co-ordinate work effectively in order to meet deadlines and deal with high workloads.
Conviction in and commitment to community rights, constitutionalism and principles of environmental justice.
Sound emotional intelligence skills to enable interaction with persons from all sectors of society.
Proficient in English. Additional regional language capability (including French) may be an advantage.
Experience working across multiple African countries or with regional institutions is desirable.
Ability and willingness to travel within Nigeria and internationally where required.
