The Community Advice Office (CAO) in Dwars River offers vital legal support to individuals and families in the surrounding communities. Serving as a trusted resource, it provides assistance across a wide spectrum of legal issues, including domestic violence, labor disputes, estate administration, and drafting wills. Over the 2023–2024 period, the CAO opened 135 new legal files and assisted over 200 people, with a noticeable increase in women seeking help. By offering daily walk-in services, the CAO continues to address the diverse needs of its clients effectively, fostering legal awareness and community support.

About the Job

The Legal Coordinator at the Dwars River Community Advice Office (CAO) will play a pivotal role in administering the office and legally representing clients across various legal forums. The position focuses on supporting previously disadvantaged individuals and organizations residing or working in the Dwars River Valley, including Lanquedoc, Pniel, Johannesdal, Kylemore, and Meerlust Bosbou. This role requires a legally qualified professional, preferably an admitted attorney, with a strong interest in Human Rights and Development Law. The Legal Coordinator will provide legal advice and representation, oversee daily office operations, and ensure the effective delivery of legal and community services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal representation for clients in courts, tribunals, and other forums.

  • Offer legal advice to individuals and organizations on a wide range of issues, including labor disputes, domestic violence, estate administration, and housing matters.

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Advice Office.

  • Maintain accurate client records and ensure compliance with legal and organizational requirements.

  • Supervise staff, interns, and volunteers as needed.

  • Conduct legal awareness campaigns and workshops in the community to inform residents about their rights and access to legal resources.

  • Liaise with local organizations, community leaders, and stakeholders to strengthen relationships and address community needs.

  • Oversee the intake, assessment, and resolution of client cases, ensuring timely and effective service delivery.

  • Prepare legal documents such as wills, protection orders, and letters of demand.

  • Report to the Board on the office’s activities, including case outcomes, community impact, and financial updates.

  • Monitor and evaluate program performance and contribute to funding applications and donor reports.

  • Engage in advocacy efforts to address systemic issues affecting the community, particularly in the areas of Human Rights and Development Law.

  • Manage the office budget and resources efficiently.

  • Seek additional funding and partnerships to sustain and expand the Advice Office’s services.

  • Ensure the Advice Office remains accessible to all clients, including walk-ins.

  • Adhere to ethical and professional standards in all legal and administrative work.

Requirements

  • Legally qualified professional, with preference for an admitted attorney.

  • Strong interest and/or experience in Human Rights and Development Law.

  • Excellent legal drafting and advocacy skills.

  • Strong organizational and administrative abilities to manage day-to-day office operations.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with clients, stakeholders, and community members.

  • A valid driver’s license is advantageous.

  • Ability to work in-office daily.
