Just Share is an innovative NGO working at the cutting edge of corporate accountability, climate action and inequality initiatives in South Africa. Using shareholder rights and collaborative activism, we seek to drive the urgent adoption of strategies and targets which deliver climate outcomes aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and to advocate for change in the private sector to reduce inequality.

About the Job

We are looking for an organised, committed, effective leader to support the executive director in managing a growing team and coordinating strategies and workplans to achieve strategic objectives. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Programme Director will contribute to the growth and development of Just Share’s climate, inequality, and governance programmes, managing and overseeing the programme planning and delivery and ensuring alignment with the organisation’s strategic objectives. The Programme Director will be a member of Just Share’s senior leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing, planning, and driving the overall suite of Just Share programme work to maximise the organisation’s impact.

  • Supporting programme staff (climate, inequality, governance) in developing and implementing strategies and workplans.

  • Empowering and mentoring staff across programmes and ensuring that they have the resources, tools and organisational support to develop and pursue campaigns in a sustainable, effective way, while developing their own professional skills and competencies.

  • Coordinating strategic planning processes and supporting monitoring, evaluation and learning to ensure ongoing progress and improvement in effectiveness.

  • Maintaining and growing relationships with key stakeholders relevant to programme development (e.g. institutional investors, regulators, industry experts and corporate representatives).

  • Ensuring that Just Share remains ahead of key developments in corporate and financial regulation relating to sustainability, as well as evolving best practices, global standards, and trends.

  • Contributing to Just Share’s thought leadership initiatives.

  • Contributing to the overall administrative and strategic management of the organisation, as well as ensuring its good reputation, institutional strength and resilience and the well-being of staff.

  • Proactively contribute to the culture of the organisation, including leadership on our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Actively engage in fundraising efforts, including outreach and relationship building and developing grant proposals and reports.

Requirements

  • A post-graduate degree and at least eight years’ experience in a similar or related role.

  • A working knowledge of the interaction between the finance sector and corporate sustainability.

  • Experience managing long-term projects or programme delivery.

  • Excellent leadership and people skills, and experience managing and growing small teams in a way that supports staff development and contributes positively to organisational culture.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Fundraising and budgeting experience.

  • A passion for activism, and familiarity with / experience of social justice campaigning.

  • A sophisticated understanding of corporate power and its interactions with social justice.

  • A collaborative mindset and a proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • The ability to keep abreast of developments in a rapidly changing context, and to develop and articulate effective strategies to drive change in complex systems.

  • Emotional intelligence and a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and open communication.
