Using shareholder rights and collaborative activism, we seek to drive the urgent adoption of strategies and targets which deliver climate outcomes aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and to advocate for change in the private sector to reduce inequality.

About the Job

We are looking for a dedicated, diligent analyst to support our climate change programme. Reporting to the Director: Climate Change Engagement, the Climate Risk Analyst will conduct independent, in-depth research and analysis of climate risk in relation to JSE-listed companies and their investors and monitor and track the implementation of legal requirements and voluntary commitments. The position is for an excellent researcher and analyst, with an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of current issues relating to the just energy transition, a sophisticated grasp of the impacts of corporate power, and the ability to assimilate and communicate complex information in a manner that is compelling and understandable to a general audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting in-depth research and rigorous analysis of corporate reports and other relevant material to support the climate team’s campaign to drive listed companies to adopt and achieve emission reduction strategies which are aligned with climate science, and to redirect capital to support a just transition to an inclusive, low-carbon economy.

  • Translating complex data and research into succinct, impactful briefings and communications products.

  • Tracking and analysing the implementation of climate change-related commitments, strategies, and targets.

  • Providing expert analysis and strategic insight to colleagues and partners and building relationships with relevant partner organisations.

  • Keeping up to date with local and global developments in corporate climate risk disclosure and management.

Requirements

  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field and at least 5 years’ proven experience as a professional researcher, analyst, or specialist journalist.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interest in climate issues, and the interaction between climate impacts and social justice, and knowledge of key issues and trends relating to the energy transition.

  • Relevant specialist experience, such as corporate research and analysis, finance analysis, and use of climate and energy scenarios, would be ideal.

  • A collaborative mindset and a proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

  • The ability to keep abreast of developments in a rapidly changing context, and to develop and articulate effective strategies to drive change in complex systems.

  • Emotional intelligence and a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and open communication.
