Greenpeace Africa was founded in 2008 and is a part of the larger Global Greenpeace Family that was founded in 1971 and works in over 50 countries. Greenpeace’s work in Africa focuses on addressing climate emergency and protecting bio-diversity, through broad campaigns promoting sustainable fishing in the oceans, protecting forests and forest peoples’ rights, ending fossil fuel and nuclear based power, promoting renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

About the Job

The HR Manager will be responsible for leading and coordinating the end to end processes of the HR functions. These include but are not limited to: Workforce planning, Job Evaluations, Recruitment, Induction and Onboarding, managing Learning and Development, Performance Management, Staff Relations, Talent and Succession Management, Staff wellness, and more. The HR Manager will be an HR generalist who can ensure that HR policies and procedures throughout fit the needs and goals of the leadership team. The HR Manager will also work closely with the Head of People Culture to enhance staff performance, conceptualising and initiating staff morale initiatives and strong relationships with all the key stakeholders within Greenpeace Africa (GPAf) to ensure delivery of the talent and people agenda.

Key Responsibilities

Recruitment and Placement

  • Identify and utilize optimal recruitment sources, in line with strategic goals.

  • Conduct effective onboarding and ensure new hires set initial objectives.

  • Manage staff contracting, including drafting contracts and coordinating with administrators.

  • Monitor employee probation periods and manage confirmation processes.

  • Grade and evaluate positions accurately.

Learning and Development:

  • Oversee training activities, aligning with skill gaps and budget.

  • Source suitable training and manage external training provider relationships.

  • Enhance induction programs and implement development programs for various levels.

  • Provide ROI analysis for L&D initiatives.

HRIS Implementation:

  • Administer and optimize HRIS to meet organizational needs.

  • Develop and maintain HRIS workflows and reports.

  • Train staff on HRIS usage and ensure accurate employee data.

  • Collaborate on payroll administration and centralize payroll systems.

Staff Duty of Care and Wellness:

  • Develop a positive employee relations and wellness environment.

  • Implement and monitor employee relations policies to boost satisfaction and engagement.

  • Launch wellness initiatives with global HR and ensure staff support for crises.

Policies and Legislation:

  • Stay updated on relevant legislation and ensure compliance.

  • Update internal policies and procedures on the Greenet intranet.

Additional Duties:

  • Support P & C strategy projects and conduct HR audits.

  • Undertake any other HR tasks as needed.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organisational Development, or Industrial Psychology.

  • 5+ years in HR management, with full HR Value Chain experience.

  • Knowledge of South African payroll, tax laws, and HR systems.

  • Deep understanding of labour law and HR best practices.

  • Strong communication, analytical skills, and a commitment to JEDIS principles.

  • Independent, approachable, with high integrity and confidentiality.

Required skills and behaviours

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Ability to multitask and execute requests on time.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Approachable.

  • High level of integrity.

  • Upholds confidentiality.
