Data Innovators (DI) is a social enterprise led by a team of young Africans who are passionate about making systemic change in development through data. We operate at the intersection of data, design, and digital technologies to help organisations push data boundaries to create positive futures. We provide digital data solutions including data visualisation and communication as well as monitoring, evaluation, research, and learning (MERL) services, and capability building and project implementation support to drive data usage and embed good data practices. We serve social change entities and governments across the development sector, globally.

About the Job

Analytics & Insights (A&I) is a critical, cross-cutting function of our service areas. The function sources, transforms, stores, and processes data to generate insights and reporting outputs for our client projects and products aiming at improving social impact. Furthermore, the function advises on data governance, analytics, and data in the development sector. We are looking for an innovative data expert who is experienced in leading teams, engaging with clients, and managing complex projects.

As Head of Analytics & Insights, this person will be the data champion and problem solver for putting “square pegs in round holes”. This person will need to manage the design and delivery of information, analytics and advanced analytics solutions and reporting that bridges data and business by providing the necessary data and insights to enable data-driven decision making.

Key Responsibilities

Spearhead the A&I’s goal setting, training and development and resource allocation and prioritization to support the business strategy

Plan and manage A&I’s profit & loss, invoicing, and timesheets

Build strategic partnerships and establish appropriate affiliations

Manage contracts and clients to exceed expectations

Drive the delivery of innovative business intelligence, analysis, reporting and insights

Ensure the A&I team uses best practice data and analytics methods, while exhibiting ethical and responsible data practices and outputs

Foster a learning environment of leaders who develop innovative solutions

Effectively manage the team through managing performance, aligning to and achieving business objectives, and identifying strengths, growth and development needs

Develop and propagate IP for data and analytics in development

Manage the services, approaches and standards for data management, collection, analysis, storage, security, integration, dissemination and visualisation, emerging approaches to data analytics, and data governance

Maintain and build documentation, templates, automate solutions, processes, and systems to efficiently deliver A&I services

Contribute to lead generation, proposal writing and scoping

Participate in networking and other business development engagements

Develop your profile as a data and analytics expert and participate in prominent platforms contribute to thought leadership

Requirements

Master’s or PhD level qualification in Data Science or related field

At least 10-15 years’ professional experience in Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, or similar

Advanced experience in data integration, statistical analysis, and data vizualisation tools

Advanced Python, R or STATA, Microsoft Excel, PowerBI/Tableau skills

Demonstrated experience with leading data visualisation and analysis projects

Understanding of local and international data standards and data governance strategies

≥ 8 years of scoping, budgeting, and managing multiple, client-facing projects

Building and managing successful teams across multiple service areas

Setting up process and systems, and codify for know-how for efficient and quality delivery

At least 2 innovative, problem-solving approaches or methodologies

Working with development sector data, especially for Early Childhood Development, Education and Training, Youth Development & Entrepreneurship, or Health
