Bertha Spaces is a program of the Bertha Foundation, established to create safe and inclusive environments where activists come together to build more just cities, countries, and a sustainable planet. Through a network of flagship and member spaces—including Bertha House, Bertha Retreat, Philippi Village (South Africa), and Postane (Turkey)—we empower activists, lawyers, storytellers, and community groups by providing space, opportunities for connection, collaborative programming, and amplifying their campaigns.

About the Job

The Director of Local and Global Community Engagement will provide strategic and political leadership for key programs under Bertha Spaces, including the Bertha Global Network (via the Bertha Accelerator), the Community Reserve Fund, and the Bertha Retreat Community Exchange. The role involves overseeing planning, recruiting, marketing, and content for the Accelerator; ensuring the integrity of the Reserve Fund; and establishing frameworks for equitable exchanges through the Community Exchange Program. Responsibilities include impact analysis, budget management, and reporting to the Bertha Foundation, while ensuring all initiatives address systemic inequalities like spatial apartheid. This position demands a dynamic leader with extensive experience in values-driven organizations, partnership building, and fostering inclusive spaces.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Program Oversight

  • Provide strategic and political direction for all Bertha Spaces community programs.

  • Lead the planning, recruitment, marketing, and content development for the Bertha Accelerator, ensuring alignment with the network’s mission.

  • Oversee the development and launch of the Community Exchange Program at Bertha Retreat, ensuring meaningful and collaborative engagement with local communities.

  • Manage the Bertha Community Reserve Fund, ensuring equitable allocation of resources to activist and community groups.

  • Collaborate with member and flagship spaces to strengthen the Bertha Global Network and foster connection across the Bertha Accelerator participants.

Data Collection and Reporting

  • Develop and implement frameworks for data collection to measure the impact of all programs.

  • Prepare regular reports on program outcomes, budgets, and impact for the Executive Director and Bertha Foundation

  • Ensure data-informed decision-making for program improvement and expansion.

Budget and Financial Oversight

  • Manage and oversee program budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and alignment with organizational goals.

  • Provide regular financial updates to the Executive Director, identifying risks and opportunities. 

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnership Development

  • Build and maintain partnerships with NGOs, activist organizations, and groups aligned with Bertha Spaces’ mission.in collaboration with Director of Marketing and Communications

  • Work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to co-create programs and initiatives

  • Represent Bertha Spaces in external forums to amplify its mission and attract new partnerships.

Advancing the Politics of Spaces

  • Develop strategies to position Bertha Spaces as political interventions, addressing systemic inequalities such as spatial apartheid.

  • Ensure that all spaces are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to the communities they serve.

  • Advocate for the role of physical spaces in enabling transformative activism and social change.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Postgraduate degree in Social Sciences or advanced degree in nonprofit management, organisational leadership or a related field

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in senior management and organizational strategy roles.

  • Proven record of leadership, collaboration, and project management skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in partnership building and network development.

  • Extensive experience working with NGOs, activist organizations, and community-focused groups.

  • Previous experience in values-driven nonprofit organizations preferred.

  • Experience in the hospitality sector is an advantage.

  • Proven ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, building trust and fostering collaboration.

  • Strong communication skills, with fluency in spoken English (an additional language is preferred).

  • Experience using CRM systems and database tools to manage relationships and data.

  • Valid drivers license and own vehicle.

  • Strategic thinker with a commitment to equitable and collaborative practices.

  • Strong political acumen and understanding of systemic inequalities such as spatial apartheid.
