About the Organisation

The Environmental Justice Fund (EJF) is a new organisation which aims to strengthen the environmental justice movement in South Africa, by providing support to community-based organisations working to advance environmental justice. EJF believes that supporting those most affected by environmental injustice to design and implement responses is our best chance of reversing the tide of environmental destruction and building a better, sustainable and just world. We provide small grants and also offer a range of complementary support to assist community-based organisations to operate sustainably and creatively.

About the Job

EJF invites interested and suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Finance Associate. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be part of building EJF from its inception. It is a part-time position for an initial period of 1 year, with the intention to renew. We anticipate a 50% contract, working 2-3 days/week with a flexible approach. The Finance Associate reports to the Executive Director. The key areas of responsibility are financial management, fundraising and donor relations, financial operations and grantee support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Director in the development and implementation of a financial sustainability strategy

  • Preparing EJF’s annual budget including forecasting future expenditure

  • Preparing budgets for fundraising proposals and preparing financial reports for donors

  • Tracking payment of tranches from donors, while responding to donor queries on financial issues

  • Participating in donor site visits and workshops where necessary

  • Managing EJF’s income, expenditure, payroll and cashflow and submitting all necessary funds and reports to SARS

  • Processing invoices, as well as travel and other reimbursement claims

  • Supporting the Director in scrutinising any financial reports from grantees, and disbursing funds to grantees
