About the Organisation

Click Learning deploys online English literacy and Numeracy programmes in under-privileged primary schools across South Africa. The programmes offer young learners the opportunity to work at their own pace through fun and enjoyable activities, navigating their learning journey by means of technology. In doing so, Click Learning is not only addressing the literacy and numeracy crisis but also equipping these young learners with the technological skills required for future success.

Click Learning has a reputation for implementation and delivery in the classroom, reaching 200,000 children by the end of 2022. We are very proud of this progress but we want to grow to reach millions of children in future and take our place as a shining example of foundational literacy and numeracy outcomes in the global education arena.

About the Job

In order to achieve our core strategic and operational aim of data gathering and analysis, we have decided to strengthen our senior leadership team with a Director focused on research and learning. The role of this Director would be to guide the leadership team to make adjustments to programme design based on his/her findings and to enable Click to endogenise data driven analyses into its yearly planning and review processes. We already have a rich set of databases, but we need to make sure these are optimised, and utilise this ‘’data lake’’ more effectively for analytical and learning purposes. We also need to collect and integrate new data where meaningful from both inside and outside the programme.

You will be the one to devise Click’s research and learning strategy and to ensure that all systems and partnerships necessary to support this are in place. You will work closely with the leadership team to provide strategic inputs and you will also engage across the organisation to ensure that learning is strongly part of our culture and that ‘’M&E’’ is the responsibility of all team members, in order to constantly improve our performance and maximise our impact on young learners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing a deep understanding of the principles and vision of the founder, the programmes and the way Click operates

  • Preparing a research and learning strategy for Click and associated operational plan for Click to continuously assess its impact and improve its performance

  • Undertaking and/or commissioning detailed analyses that will help us understand the relative contribution of Click’s existing programme interventions to the mission’s success or otherwise together with their impact over periods of time, with statistical analyses for determining the correlations and/or causations among multiple variables

  • Working with the leadership team and external experts to ensure the e-Quiz and any other outcome measurement tools are robust and appropriate to measure the outcomes of Click, and engage in further development of such assessments as needed for other Click outcomes

  • Undertaking detailed analyses of our existing data for the purpose of adjusting and/or proposing relevant key performance indicators for financial and operational performance, in collaboration with the executive team (EXCO)

  • Working closely with academics and government departments to compare Click’s outcomes (and develop measures as needed to do so) with appropriate local and international benchmarks

  • Leading in the further development and implementation of a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system across the organisation to continuously test our theory of change, and particularly to measure our outcomes

  • Engaging with our various regional and sub-regional staff and partners at schools and in government to implement internal performance measures of reach and quality

  • Coordinating and managing data collection and reporting needs for Click, collaborating closely with the COO, CFO and CTO, and guiding the data analyst

  • Collecting, analysing, and sharing relevant information, research and findings from other education technology programmes, education bodies, government, research institutes and others that will be useful benchmarks or information for Click

  • Participating in data analysis and drafting of quarterly and other reports and/or presentations including regular review of progress on performance with program and leadership teams, and board and funders as needed

  • Propose, procure and manage independent evaluation and research related projects with technical partners in South Africa as required

  • Propose, procure and manage research partnerships with international and local research institutes, universities, government departments and others as needed or desired

Requirements

  • At least a Master’s Degree and 5 years of applied measurement experience, such as social science, international development, public policy, education, data science or related fields

  • A demonstrated ability to set objectives and strategies for research and learning and to implement these effectively

  • Previous experience working with data analysis, program evaluation, research design, and/or survey development, preferably in an educational or social service environment

  • Previous experience of building, managing and/or participating in international or national research teams

  • Previous experience with managing complex datasets and underlying technology infrastructure is a plus

  • Well-developed organization skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Comfortable presenting information across various stakeholder groups including, but not limited to leadership team, program teams, and other external stakeholders

  • Able to work independently and across geographies using technology

  • Passionate about education and improving the lives of learners in South Africa
