The Sustainable Finance Strategist will be part of the Climate Finance Fellowship, a pilot initiative providing pathways for finance professionals to transition to climate finance careers with the goal of accelerating organizations leading the energy transition financing movement in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition to your position at The Sunrise Project, as a Fellow you will benefit from climate change, energy finance, and leadership development training, as well as building your global network of likeminded professionals. Some international travel may also be required. IREX, a global non-profit that has supported more than 50,000 Fellows over 50 years, will implement the fellowship and provide ongoing support to you and your host organization.

About the Job

This is a new role to support the Investor and Insurance Programs in Asia with a specific focus on asset owners in Korea, Japan and other countries in the region. We support networks of organisations to work together to achieve outcomes that would not be possible by individual organisations acting alone. We expect all roles at Sunrise to actively support the capacity building of these networks and partner organisations.

You will work closely with our team members and partners to develop strategies to support decarbonization initiatives with the goal of accelerating renewable energy deployment and just transition. You will identify leaders in financial institutions who are committed to climate actions and create plans to further amplify their voice for stronger climate action by all the players in the sector. You will support work on portfolio analysis, developing investment frameworks, etc to encourage asset owners to commit to the fossil fuel phase out while reducing investment and climate risks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Works closely with the Senior Strategists in the Investors and Insurance Program and our key partners to co-develop, coordinate, and implement campaign strategies and tactics aimed at bringing ambitious climate action by financial institutions in Korea and Japan;

  • Researches, analyses and monitors policy processes, gaps, opportunities and leverage points in Korea and Japan and other Asian countries to identify opportunities and strategic interventions in the region;

  • Researches, analyses and monitors climate and ESG policies of key investors and insurance companies in Asia to identify opportunities to influence them;

  • Maps factors affecting decision making at key asset owners and asset managers in Asian market;

  • Develops and writes briefing papers and other public communication materials to communicate our campaign goals to the public;

  • Builds and nurtures strong collaboration with our partner groups in Asia to support their campaigns and identifies new potential partners and/or allies to contribute to the expansion of the global climate movement;

  • Supports the development and implementation of strategic plans in Asia.

Requirements

You’ll need to be a problem-solver, have transferable expertise, be able to prioritise, be curious and ambitious to support the delivery of our goals, be able to develop relationships with a wide range of actors, you’ll need to be strategic and be able to undertake research as well as being comfortable with complexity and working with a high level of autonomy. You have an eye for technical detail, a proven ability to master new topics quickly and ability to turn such information into real world change. You have experience of working with organisations in Asia and have knowledge of financial systems and markets in the region. You have passion for action on climate change, sustainable finance and a commitment to social justice.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • An understanding of the financial system in Asia;

  • An understanding of socio-economic system and political culture in Asia;

  • A strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to clearly articulate complex issues to a wide range of audience in Korean and English;

  • Experience in a similar or related field including unpaid, or lived experience.
