About the Organisation

The Nigerian Off Grid Market Accelerator Program (NOMAP) commenced in August 2018 as an independent program focused on high-impact initiatives to support the advancement of the off-grid energy sector in Nigeria. It is supported by the Shell Foundation and FCDO. NOMAP, in the last five years has supported solar home system companies, Mini-grid developers, and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to address market barriers limiting the sector. Notably, NOMAP has collaborated with a fintech company to develop a payment infrastructure that supports collection from unbanked customers of solar home systems companies.

About the Job

NOMAP is piloting a funding program that will provide consumer financing for productive use equipment with three mini grid developer and providing concessional finance to mini-grid developer to support clean energy powered services in rural food value chains. The learnings from the pilot will be shared with the sector and will inform the development of a sector-wide fund for productive use financing. NOMAP is also providing support to state governments in the development of Off-Grid Policies and Strategies for clean energy access in the states, especially in last mile rural communities.

We are seeking to hire a Climate Finance Associate to research, design and implement innovative climate financing initiatives and instruments to advance the delivery of off-grid clean energy solutions to un-served and under-served persons in Nigeria. The Program Associate will work alongside and in close coordination with the Program Director and team members responsible for NOMAP’s interventions.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development (50%)

  • Ideate and design a variety of financing instruments and innovative climate financing mechanisms for off-grid clean energy access initiatives.

  • Support fundraising efforts, including the development of climate finance expressions of interest, project proposals and concept notes.

  • Provide technical inputs in establishing and managing partnerships and networking initiatives with key players in the climate finance space.

  • Co-create and participate in technical working groups with government institutions and other stakeholders, including the private sector.

  • Maintain excellent relationships with key partners, and support strategies for new partner engagement.

  • Support the leadership team in sourcing, monitoring, and responding to strategic opportunities.

Research and Thought leadership (30%)

  • Undertaking research for a thorough understanding of banking, financial institutions, and related industry knowledge for climate investments in Nigeria

  • Carry out research on the climate finance landscape in Nigeria including the policy and regulatory environment, stakeholder mapping, types of climate finance instruments, projects, and other relevant areas of research.

  • Development of articles, insight reports, research papers, briefings, and presentations on climate finance that provide action for climate empowerment.

  • Manage internal knowledge management resources, such as project data sheets, proposals, CVs, capability statements, reference letters, testimonials, etc.

Outreach and Communications (10%)

  • Organize and participate in industry webinars that disseminate and share climate finance knowledge and findings through communication products such as blogs and podcasts.

  • Represent NOMAP at COP and other climate finance conferences and workshops.

Project Management (10%)

  • Contribute to cross-cutting activities including monitoring and evaluation of targets and results.

  • Perform any other duties that might arise within the project activities.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 5-10 years of professional experience working in climate finance, development finance, ESG, or related sector. Knowledge of the energy space is an advantage.

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines. (Master’s degree or/and MBA in a relevant discipline is desirable)


Abilities, Skills and Attributes:

  • Robust understanding of the financial instruments, financial modelling, and investments in the private and public sectors.

  • Deep familiarity with international climate policy processes, carbon markets and the UNFCCC negotiations

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Excellent analytical and report-writing skills

  • Proficiency in the use of MS Excel, Powerpoint, Word and Data visualisation tools, and the use of relevant finance software.

  • Demonstrate ability to work autonomously, be self-motivated and drive closure on a complex range of activities.

  • Strong writing and oral presentation skills; ability to effectively communicate insights from technical research to non-technical audiences both verbally and in writing.

  • Self-motivated and resourceful with an ability to juggle multiple priorities, handle assignments.

  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills

  • Excellent spoken and written fluency in English.

  • Independent worker able to take ownership of activities, in a deadline-driven environment

  • Willingness to travel within Nigeria.

  • Desirable: Experience in working on a donor-funded/international development project in Nigeria’s off-grid energy sector.
